Ulassai, Sardinia Trip Report Sep / Oct 2025

I first heard about Ulassai sitting in Athens airport on the way home from Kalymnos last year – completely at random I met some climbers I hadn’t seen for perhaps 10 or 15 years and we were chatting about where they had been. They thoroughly recommended Ulassai in Sardinia so I checked it out and decided it looked great – rapidly added to the CMC meets list for Sep / Oct 2025.

When push came to shove, there were 4 of us who headed out, Paul Drew, Barbara Murray, Seamus Wrigley and Paul Bunker plus of course Lexie who never likes to miss a trip. Seamus and Paul took the easy option of flying from Manchester to Olbia (2 ½ hrs drive away) – maybe not as cheap as Alicante or Malaga but a good option and they both got out climbing the day they arrived. Paul, Barbara and Lexie took the long route in the van via Vallouise, France – possibly not the mot sensible option for a short trip.

Anyway the bottom line is that Ulassai is a fantastic recently developed sport climbing area and I’ll definitely be back (look out for the CMC meets list for 2026).

We climbed 7 days in a row at different crags each day, all of them well worth another visit (or 20) and great routes mostly between 20m and 35m long. The sun shone, the bolting is friendly, the rock solid and views amazing. We all ticked approx. 35 routes, from 5a upwards and I even managed to onsight a 7a on the final day so all good.

About the only slight negative is that it is definitely on the Euro Hot Rock circuit now and it was busy although not overwhelming so – must admit I wouldn’t have wanted to stay in the campsite though, more vans than you can shake a big stick at. We rented a nice 3 bed house in the neighbouring village of Jerzu – good value and convenient for the crags, being no more than a 10 minute drive.

We even managed to get a couple of swims in the warm Mediterranean Sea – still very pleasant at the end of Sep.
