Who We Are?

our club

If you are interested in Rock Climbing, Mountaineering or Hill Walking, you will find a friendly welcome from like-minded people in the Chester Mountaineering Club. New members are always welcome.

We have an active membership based around the Chester area and run a regular programme of meets and events.

With a wide range of excellent climbing and hill walking options within 90 mins drive of Chester and a wonderful climbing hut in Snowdonia, our club continues to be one of the best supported regional climbing clubs with around 200 members.

Wednesday Evening meets

We meet every Wednesday which members can attend by just turning up.

Climbing every Wednesday evening through the summer to local sports crags, trad crags and bouldering venues – followed by a visit to a nearby pub.

Climbing every Wednesday through the winter at one of the local walls – followed by a visit to a nearby pub.

Some Wednesday evening group walks in summer culminating in a visit to the same pub as the climbers

A number of social evenings during the winter including members’ slide shows showcasing trips throughout the year and a chairman’s Quiz

Other meets and events

Regular Weekend Climbing and Walking meets – either for the day or weekend depending on distance from Chester.

A number of week long meets to further destinations.  Previous meets have included: Sports climbing in Spain, Scottish winter meet at Braemar, Ecrins ski touring, Pabbay Scottish Island sea cliff climbing, sports climbing and walking in the French Ariege, sports climbing in Leonidio, Greece and sea cliff climbing on Lundy.

We also have annual social events in Chester and our hut near Llanberis.

For technical activities such as rock climbing or winter mountaineering, the club does not provide instruction for complete beginners, but once able to operate safely at a basic level, newcomers to the sport will be able to draw on the wealth of experience within the Club.

Affiliation with the BMC

Like most mountaineering clubs, ours has always been  affiliated with the national representative body to protect the freedoms and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers – the British Mountaineering Council (BMC). Our members are automatically club members of the BMC which provides civil liability insurance for UK mountain activities, an annual copy of the BMC Summit magazine and the ability to purchase specialised mountaineering insurance for climbing trips as well as a number of other services available from their website.

Club members are entitled to discounts of up to 15% on outdoor gear through certain selected outlets. More details are provided on joining the Club.

Access to Huts

Mountaineering Club huts are cheap places to stay and explore the mountains and hills around the UK.

We have our own hut in Llanberis, beautifully situated on the road up towards the Snowdon path which can be used by members  most of the time for a small nightly charge, plus access to three more in the Lake District owned by kindred clubs.

We also regularly book other mountaineering club huts around the UK for walking and climbing meets.

History

Chester Mountaineering Club was founded in 1953 by a few keen climbers in a local pub. It was the year that saw the first ascent of Everest and 2023 will be our 70th Anniversary.

Many things about climbing and mountaineering have changed over the years, but we still meet in a pub after climbing every Wednesday evening

Club Communications

We use many channels to help keep our members in touch with everyone.

As well as this website, we have a facebook group for members and an instagram account to share members photos. Recently we have  set up WhatsApp groups for climbers and walkers which get used heavily before and after regular meets.

We also produce around 6 newsletters each year which keeps everyone up to date with future plans and meet reports.
